Why SULA Grants Matter

Supporting Small Shareholder Farmers

One of the biggest hurdles to starting a small food or agriculture business is access—access to funding, knowledge, and support. That’s where our Scaling Up Local Agriculture (SULA) grants step in.

These grants provide emerging farmers and food entrepreneurs with the resources and guidance they need to take that first critical step toward building a sustainable business.

Farmers like Sharon Thompson and Huel Moss have used SULA grants to start new projects, expand their operations, increase yields, and improve the quality of food for their communities.

Small Farmers, Big Impact

Small shareholder farmers are the backbone of local food systems. Many rely on subsistence farming to feed their families and sell the surplus to support their livelihoods.

When we provide support—financial, technical, or educational—farmers like Sharon and Huel can:

  • Grow higher-quality produce
  • Increase income stability
  • Strengthen community food security

The effects ripple beyond the farm: children can afford school fees, families go to sleep nourished, and communities gain access to fresh, healthy food.

Investing in Long-Term Growth

SULA Grants aren’t just about immediate support—they’re about building sustainable systems.

From small grants for rebuilding farmers to larger investments like the Spirulina Development Institute (SDI), our goal is to create long-term hubs for innovation, training, and sustainable agriculture.

Every grant, big or small, is an investment in resilience, health, and opportunity. By empowering farmers and supporting organizations like SDI, we’re helping communities thrive—one garden, one farm, and one entrepreneur at a time.

“Thank you for all you have done. You’ve made a significant impact on our farm and it was and is greatly appreciated. Thank you for taking the time to invest in us.“

“I am so thankful for The Blue Atlas Project!

When I applied for the grant, I honestly thought it would be a long, difficult process that would end fruitless, as I had applied for other grants in the past and was unsuccessful.

Surprisingly, within less than a week of my application, Kali contacted me. She constantly kept me up to date with the status of my application. It wasn’t long before I received news of my approval!

I can’t put into words the feeling I got when I received my grant! I’ve been gardening on a small scale for about two years. Kali and The Blue Atlas team have not only helped me to realize the unlimited potential of backyard farming but, through the help of their educational projects and the grant, have made growth and expansion a reality for my family and me.”

The Blue Atlas Project is the real deal!
